Semple Brown Architects
A “ship in a bottle,” unique in the performing arts, The Ellie Caulkins Opera House.
Semple Brown Architects designed the new space within the former Quigg Newton Municipal Auditorium known as The Ellie. The Ellie captures the historic essence of the grand opera houses in a modern interpretation, emphasizing intimacy, warmth, and comfort. The lyric configuration stacks the 2,268-seat audience vertically in shallow balconies and side boxes.
The resulting design concentrates the audience within a short distance, 113-feet from the stage to the farthest seat and builds an overall impression of great intimacy and performance energy. This magnificent space is humidified and provides state-of-the-art technical support, acoustical excellence, and clean sight lines. The Ellie is one of only 3 opera houses in the United States, 1 of 9 worldwide, with seat back tilting at every seat in the house.
